Hip Hop, Racism and Education

A conversation on hip-hop, race and education with host Darren Chetty, joined by Jay Smooth, and Veronica Mason.

Jay Smooth is the creator of the Ill Doctrine vlog and founder of New York’s longest running hip-hop radio show, WBAI’s Underground Railroad. Jay will be joining the conversation to discuss the differences between the US and UK context when it comes to discussing race, identity and why Hip-hop often gets the blame for the ills of society.

Veronica Mason is a senior lecturer, course leader for the BSc Youth Studies degree programme at London Metropolitan University and a professionally qualified youth and community worker.  And as a self-classified old school ‘Hip-Hop head’, she is currently working towards a doctorate degree which will represent the first Hip-Hop inter-generational study to explore the significance and meanings that UK black men attach to African American Hip-Hop.
